Imagine…
… you’re in a boat in the middle of the Pacific. You’re the captain of this boat.
And you’re in a race; a race that you desperately want to win.
But you have a problem; there’s a hole in the bottom of your boat!
And this means that both you and your team are spending as much time bailing as you do rowing and steering the boat. Just so that you can stay in the race.
Things aren’t great; but you’re getting by. Because you’ve worked out a method that keeps the boat afloat. Half your team are bailing and just managing to keep the water at bay. The other half are rowing. And you’re steering the boat.
And from time-to-time you lend a hand bailing. And you lend a hand rowing. Because you’re great at both. In fact, you have to bail and row when a member of the team needs a rest, or becomes ill.
There’s no time to spare. There’s no people to spare. You have to eat while you work; and of course sleep is out of the question. If you sleep you will drop out of the race at best, or sink!
And you get by. Bailing. Rowing. Steering. Then bailing some more.
All of a sudden a mermaid appears in front of your boat. The mermaid is wise. She starts to offer advice. She suggests that you should fix the hole by improving your systems!
Your first reaction is to grab the harpoon and shoot the mermaid. After all, you’re in a race. There’s no time to lose.
And yet you know that if things remain as they are either you or your team will eventually collapse from stress and exhaustion. And you’ll drop behind in the race. And ultimately you’ll sink.
And then you’ll have to come up with some pretty good swimming systems! Fast!
How on earth should you change things to stay in the race, stay afloat AND get better at both? Maybe even win the race?
Maybe you should listen to what the wise mermaid has to say. Maybe you should fix the hole by improving your systems.
And it’s exactly the same for your business.
Systems are essential to create a business that works exceptionally well so that you, the business owner, don’t have to. Systems are the solution.
