Do you live to work or work to live?
Is your life/work balance how you want it?
Learn how to enjoy a better quality of life...

Consider this...

Imagine…

… you’re in a boat in the middle of the Pacific.  You’re the captain of this boat.

And you’re in a race; a race that you desperately want to win.

But you have a problem; there’s a hole in the bottom of your boat!

And this means that both you and your team are spending as much time bailing as you do rowing and steering the boat.  Just so that you can stay in the race.

Things aren’t great; but you’re getting by.  Because you’ve worked out a method that keeps the boat afloat.  Half your team are bailing and just managing to keep the water at bay.  The other half are rowing.  And you’re steering the boat.

And from time-to-time you lend a hand bailing.  And you lend a hand rowing.  Because you’re great at both.  In fact, you have to bail and row when a member of the team needs a rest, or becomes ill.

There’s no time to spare.  There’s no people to spare.  You have to eat while you work; and of course sleep is out of the question.  If you sleep you will drop out of the race at best, or sink!

And you get by.  Bailing.  Rowing.  Steering.  Then bailing some more.

All of a sudden a mermaid appears in front of your boat.  The mermaid is wise.  She starts to offer advice.  She suggests that you should fix the hole by improving your systems!

Your first reaction is to grab the harpoon and shoot the mermaid.  After all, you’re in a race.  There’s no time to lose.

And yet you know that if things remain as they are either you or your team will eventually collapse from stress and exhaustion.  And you’ll drop behind in the race.  And ultimately you’ll sink.

And then you’ll have to come up with some pretty good swimming systems!  Fast!

How on earth should you change things to stay in the race, stay afloat AND get better at both?  Maybe even win the race?

Maybe you should listen to what the wise mermaid has to say.  Maybe you should fix the hole by improving your systems.

And it’s exactly the same for your business.

Systems are essential to create a business that works exceptionally well so that you, the business owner, don’t have to.  Systems are the solution.

The Fatal Assumption

“Small Businesses don’t work, the people who own them do” - Michael Gerber

And you’re doing the wrong work!  You’re not running a business, you’re self-employed – you have a job.

According to Michael Gerber, we make a ‘Fatal Assumption’: if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does that technical work.

And this is the root cause of most small business failures!  And as a ‘technician-turned-business-owner’ your focus is upside down – you have a tactical view rather than a strategic view.  You see the work that has to get done and immediately jump to it.  It’s easy to believe that a business is nothing more than an aggregate of the various types of work done in it, when in fact it is much more than that.

As Gerber puts it:

“Because in a business like that, what your customers are buying is not your business’s ability to give them what they want but your ability to give them what they want.  And that’s what’s wrong with it!

What if you don’t want to be there?  What if you’d like to be someplace else?  Working in the garden?  Or on a sabbatical?  Isn’t there any place you would rather be at times than in your business, filling the needs of your customers who need you so badly because you’re the only one who can do it?

What if you’re sick, or feel like being sick? Or what if you just feel lazy?

Don’t you see?  If your business depends on you, you don’t own a business – you have a job.  And it’s the worst job in the world because you’re working for a lunatic!”

So what is the answer?

The System is the Solution

But what are systems?

Systems are what a business does; they describe exactly how a business operates.

Systems can take many forms - procedures manuals, written scripts, standard forms, checklists, standard letters and so on.

Key elements of systems are the processes within a business, the step-by-step procedures.  And each process is made up of a series of activities that contains inputs and outputs (described more fully later on).  Well-designed and documented systems can be the greatest asset a business has.  For example, McDonald’s system has allowed it to create more millionaires than any other business.

The McDonald’s system works so well that it can be replicated anywhere in the World.

But why bother spending time building systems in your business?

The benefits of having systems include:

Business Growth Resources
Anyone can operate them
So you can step back from working IN the business and concentrate on working ON the business, and it will still work brilliantly without you. And of course, by giving you more time they also allow you to spend more time on the other things that are important to you too.
Business Growth Resources
The business is less dependent on any individual or group
Because anyone can run the system. So you’ll never need to fear staff illnesses, retirements, defections and industrial disputes again.
Business Growth Resources
The business is easier to grow
Since others using the system can replicate its success.
Business Growth Resources
The systems can be tested and improved in a systematic and scientific way.
So, as a result, everyone ends up using the same optimal processes - rather than doing things in their own (often sub-optimal) way.  And this means a HAPPIER TEAM and HAPPIER CUSTOMERS.
Business Growth Resources
What you do, how you do it and the results you get all become more consistent and predictable.
So you can relax, secure in the knowledge that everything works.
Business Growth Resources
So, for all these reasons, the business becomes more valuable and saleable -
and probably much, much more profitable too.
Business Growth Resources

And those are just a few of the reasons why systems are so powerful.

So it is perhaps not surprising that many people claim that the word SYSTEM actually stands for...

SYSTEM - Save Yourself Time Earn yourself Money
And what happens when you don’t have systems (or the systems you have don’t work)?
  • Sleepless nights for the business owner
  • Working 60-70 hour weeks
  • Staff with little drive and motivation
  • Constant cash flow issues
  • Late delivery to customers
  • Inconsistent quality

Do any of these sound familiar?
